Cloud in the Sky
Rejissyor: Edgar Ulmer. This film courtesy of The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) DIRECTOR: Edgar Ulmer. SPONSOR: National Tuberculosis Association. CAMERA: J. Burgi Contner. EDITOR: Marc Asch. SOUND: Dean Cole. NARA ARC Identifier: 98567 Produced in both English and Spanish, the film focuses on the Lopez family, now motherless because of tuberculosis. When Consuelo, the daughter of the family, begins to manifest symptoms, she prays fervently, though a “wise padre,” as the credits would have this character, advises her to seek medical attention. The film’s opening montage is intriguing for its portrayal of Mexican contributions to the American way of life and its frank narration informing viewers that America’s Spanish speaking citizens “bear more than their share of the crushing burden of tuberculosis.” Directed by Edgar Ulmer.
