WONDERFUL WORLD OF WHEELS 1960s AUTOMOBILES SPORTS CARS & CUSTOMS BIG DADDY ROTH 68014

A short version of a longer form documentary with the same name that aired on CBS in 1966, “Wonderful World of Wheels” was produced and directed by Gene McCabe for Petersen Productions (Robert E. Petersen, executive producer), the film division of Petersen Publishing Co. The film showcases the automobile industry, particularly the sport and recreation aspect in the 1960’s. It also shows the early tie between the automobile world and film industry and includes footage from "Goldfinger" as well as cameo appearances by Fabian, John Derek, and Big Daddy Roth. It is narrated by Lloyd Bridges (:56) and he begins with the information that Americans had traveled 800 billion motoring miles that year (2:59) and leads into recreational vehicles such as the go-cart. Here is where Fabain (3:49) makes his appearance while working on go-carts and taking a few racing laps around the track. These carts were essentially simplified race cars (3:57). Long distance endurance races could be up to 500 miles (5:37) and Fabian is seen laying flat in an endurance cart (6:05) as it reduced resistance and increased speed. Automobile racing had become an increasingly popular spectator sport (6:47). The inside span of a Detroit car show is shown (7:01) and these innovations often influenced vehicle designs in the area (7:25). Big Daddy Roth’s model, which was a single passenger car with enough room for a surfboard only, is shown on the beach (8:06). The Big Surf Woody follows and was built by George Barris, an American designer (8:24). John Derek makes his appearance driving a vehicle in charming pintel as now nearly any color was available for automobile paint (9:01) contrary to the early choice of black only. The Magnificent Monster (9:12) and the Aqua Car (9:22) follow leading into older cars such as the submarine car and a backwards driving car (10:49).
