Rejissyor: Walter Lantz Productions, Inc.. Chilly Willy is a penguin cartoon character who was starred in a series set of 50 theatrical shorts from 1953 to 1972. He became the second most popular Lantz/Universal character after Woody Woodpecker, and made a successful transition to the screen when his shorts aired alongside other Walter Lantz cartoons on The Woody Woodpecker Show . Paul J. Smith directed the first toon, simply titled Chilly Willy (1953), the main title. The initial version of Chilly Willy resembled Woody Woodpecker, except with flippers and black feathers, but in subsequent cartoons an entirely new design was used. The alternative was named "The Deep Freeze" as the TV Print title from The Woody Woodpecker Show (1957-1972). Tex Avery revived the character for two of his most notable shorts, 02 - I'm Cold (1954), and the Academy Award nominated 03 - The Legend of Rock-a-bye Point (1955). After Avery left the studio, the Chilly Willy cartoons were directed by Paul J. Smith and Alex Lovy, with some 1960's cartoons directed by Jack Hannah and Sid Marcus. Most of Chilly Willy's plots always involved staying warm and finding food - and always meeting an opposition from a dog named Smedley (voiced by Daws Butler in his "Huckleberry Hound" voice). Chilly was much quite of a nuisance to Smedley than an enemy often showing up where Smedley is working, usually for some mean consumer or employer. There were other times, however, when Chilly and Smedley got along (as they did in two cartoons: 26 - Fractured Friendship (1965) and 34 - Vicious Viking (1967). Two of Chilly Willy's friends that entered in the mid-late 1960s were Maxie the Polar Bear (voiced by Daws Butler) and Gooney the "Gooney Bird" Albatross (voiced by Daws Butler impersonating Joe E. Brown). Maxie was seen with Chilly more than Gooney has.
